Moves That Must Be Mastered For Figure Skating Competitions

By Gabin Reeds

Figure skating has become one of the most popular sports watched on television. People all over the world marvel at the grace, agility, and strength of figure skaters who are judged according to their intricate routines.

Skaters have a way of making their routines look graceful and calm, much like ballet dancers. However, in reality their performances are not only difficult but require years of dedicated practice. There is no doubt that on their way to perfecting their routines they most likely had to endure numerous falls, bumps, and injuries.

New skaters who are keen to compete are encouraged to learn and practice the various moves in figure skating. These include the basic jumps spins, steps, turns, and lifts that are often seen in figure skating routines.

One of the most popular moves that have crowds holding their breath is the jump. A jump requires a skater to leap in the air, spin a number of times, before landing back on the ice. Being one of the most difficult moves, skaters actually practice this in a gym before executing it on the ice.

The spin is probably the most marvelous move to watch as it requires the skater to spin rapidly while at the same time contorting their body to make a graceful shape while they spin.

For pair figure skating, lifts are required. Here, the man will lift his usually dainty partner into the air while skating. Again, there are many variations to the lift.

Lifts are one of the hardest moves and can involve a lot of falling down and bruising. In order to minimize these injuries, lifts are practiced at the gym before on the ice.

For many fans, figure skating epitomizes grace, strength, and skill. It integrates athleticism and dance into a routine that is creative and breathtaking to watch. It is no wonder they adore their skating idols and show appreciation by throwing them roses and stuffed toys after a performance.
