Causes of Deformed Toenails

By Natasha Tishee

When those summer months hit it means one thing only to those people suffering with deformed toenails. How to hide the embarrassing problem while wearing sandals, or whether to wear tennis shoes and try not to mind everyone else seems to have beautiful feet and sandals! You are not alone though, deformed toenails are a very common problem usually caused by toenail fungus.

If toenail fungus is the cause of your problem, you can usually tell from the appearance of the nail or nails. The color becomes yellowish, the nails thicken and become flaky underneath. You may have a problem with sweaty feet and the bottom of the feet or in between toes may have scaly skin.

Treating toenail fungus takes dedication and patience. There is no one or tow week cure for this problem, treating toenail fungus successfully takes months of treatment, which ever method you choose, medicated, home remedy or over the counter. After a few months you will notice a healthy nail starting to grow through, and then between 6 to 9 months the whole nail will be healthy and fungus free. A lot of people can try over the counter treatments but if you have a more severe infection see a doctor or podiatrist for a prescribed treatment.

There are other causes of deformed toenails though fungus is the most common. An injury to the nail for example can cause a nail to deform. Sometimes this can grow out after 6 to 9 months, but if the root of the nail has also been injured this may mean it is permanent. In such a case, nail polish can be a blessing.

Other causes of deformed toenails include bone spurs or psoriasis. A nail affected by psoriasis looks pitted, there may be some separation from the nail bed, scaling on the feet or small blisters. If you are not sure what the cause of your deformed toenails is get it checked out by an expert. They will probably be able to diagnose the problem from your medical history, the symptoms and an examination, though they may do a culture to confirm.
